It was a smooth and solid performance by Pat Nixon of the Gonzaga Bulldogs against Notre Dame today. He crafted a fine 3-hitter in blanking them 1-0 and chalked up 8 strikeouts and no walks along the way.
"It certainly makes my job easy," said the Gonzaga skipper. "When my pitcher pitches a shutout. I can just sit back, watch and enjoy."

In a knockout performance, Junior Brown beat the Buffalos 6-0 with an impressive 6-hit shutout.
The Bruins hurler finished with 4 strikeouts and no walks. He showed pinpoint control and a sharp fastball.
Brown told reporters after the game, "My arm felt good, mechanics were good and my stuff was working... it don't get any better than this."
The Buffalos manager said, "It was a rough one for my guys. We weren't at our best... and their guy was."
This year Brown has a 5-4 mark in 10 starts with a 5.28 ERA. He has given up 75 hits in 59.2 innings, struck out 47 and issued 15 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .305 batting average against him. |

The Michigan Wolverines were almost helpless today in their 7-0 loss to Creighton hurler Cliff Sheffield. He kept them confused the entire ballgame and spun a 3-hit shutout.
The Michigan manager said in the postgame interview, "Tip your hat to Sheffield. He kept us off balance all night."
Sheffield said, "It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play. It was just one of those games that things went my way."
He had 1 walk and 11 strikeouts in a strong performance.
This year Sheffield has fashioned a 6-3 mark, 2.60 ERA and pitched 72.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .253 against him and he has logged 60 strikeouts. |
